Updating the Theme

Nexgen receives regular updates that add features, improve performance, and patch security issues. Keeping your theme current is one of the most important things you can do for your website. There are two reliable ways to update: automatically through the Envato Market plugin, or manually by uploading the latest theme zip.

Your customizations are safe

Your settings live in the WordPress database, not in the theme files. That includes your Global Style, Header, Footer, and every other builder configuration. Updating the theme replaces the code, not your data — so your customizations are preserved.

Option 1: Update with Envato Market Recommended

The Envato Market plugin delivers theme updates quickly and securely, right from your WordPress dashboard. You will usually be prompted to install it after activating Nexgen, but you can also install it manually at any time.

Connect your account

1. Sign in to Envato. Open ThemeForest and sign in with your username and password.

2. Create an API token. Go to the Envato token generator and give the token a name, for example “My WordPress site”.

3. Enable the required permissions. Make sure these are checked:

   • View and search Envato sites
   • Download your purchased items
   • List purchases you’ve made

4. Copy the token. Agree to the terms, click Create Token, and copy the generated token.

5. Paste it into WordPress. In your dashboard, open the Envato Market plugin, paste the token into the field, and click Save Changes.

Apply updates

Once connected, the plugin lists every WordPress theme you purchased through Envato Market. When a Nexgen update is available, you can apply it directly from this page (or from the standard WordPress Updates screen).

Option 2: Update by re-uploading the zip

If you prefer, you can update manually by downloading the newest theme zip from ThemeForest and uploading it over the existing version.

1. Download the latest zip. From your ThemeForest Downloads page, download the newest Installable WordPress file only for Nexgen.

2. Upload the new version. In WordPress, go to Appearance » Themes, click Add New » Upload Theme, choose the new zip, and install it. When prompted, confirm that you want to replace the current version.

3. Activate if needed. If activation is required after the update, click Activate.

Caution

Never edit the Nexgen theme files directly. Any changes made to the theme’s code would be overwritten by an update. For custom code, use a child theme instead.
